Calle Ocho Festival (March)

Celebrate Latin music, dance, and food during this massive street fest. Once upon a fun 70s summer, a group of Miami kids decided to start an affiliate of Kiwanis International. They wanted to be heard. They wanted to be different. They wanted to change the world. Armed with a vision and hard work, they started Calle Ocho Music Festival, which soon became the largest Hispanic festival in the country. Soon after, all-time partner The Miami Herald suggested to expand the party to a larger audience and Carnaval Miami was born as the platform for all shapes of art, music, fashion, cuisine, and sports.

Jungle Island Eco Park

Explore tropical animals and immersive exhibits at this iconic park. The theme park's landmark is the sails covering the Jungle Theater, an arena where "Tale of the Tiger", featuring large cats and wildlife and other shows are presented. Hercules, a 900-pound liger, a cross between a lion and a tiger, is housed near the Jungle Theater. In the Parrot Bowl, the "Winged Wonders" show highlights birds from around the world, including the Andean condor, cassowary (the only trained cassowary in the world), and king vulture. In the "Serpentarium" (named in honor of Bill Haast's famed Miami Serpentarium), a wide spectrum of animals are presented from African penguins to alligator snapping turtles, boa constrictor snakes to lemurs. Various other animal feedings, keeper talks and casual presentations occur throughout the park daily. There is a petting zoo where visitors can interact with a number of domestic and exotic animals, including an experience with red kangaroos. The park's "Everglades Habitat" recreates the ecosystem of the Florida Everglades, featuring much of the natural flora and fauna found in the natural environment.

Crandon Park Beach Day

Relax, kayak, or spot peacocks in this scenic barrier island park. Crandon Park was a donation, made to the County, in 1940 by heirs of Commodore William John Matheson, a wealthy aniline dye businessman who used the land as a coconut plantation, with the condition that the land be used as a public park. In exchange for the land donation Chairman Charles H. Crandon of the County Commission, for whom the park is named, offered to have the County build a causeway that would connect Key Biscayne to the mainland. Zoo Miami had its origins in Crandon Park’s botanical garden. The County purchased several animals in 1948, which started the Crandon Zoo. By 1965, Crandon Zoo had grown into one of the major zoos in the country, with over 1,000 animals and about 380 species. Today, with amenities such as Crandon Gardens, a nature center, marina, golf course and a tennis center, Crandon Park is visited by locals and tourists who enjoy the many recreational opportunities afforded.
